Want to cancel confirmed train ticket? Here are cancellation and refund rules of IRCTC

In case, a confirmed ticket is cancelled less than 12 hours and up to four hours before the scheduled departure of the train or up to chart preparation whichever is earlier, 50% of the fare gets deducted.

New Delhi: Sometimes you may have to change your travel plans at the last moment due to health issues, poor weather, family obligations or some personal issue. If you are cancelling your train tickets at the last moment then you may have to pay up to 50 per cent of the ticket amount as cancellation charges. IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation) offers a facility for cancellation of confirmed tickets before the preparation of chart.

But it may be noted that cancellation charges are levied on per passenger basis and not on ticket basis. If you are cancelling your train tickets at the last moment then you must be aware of cancellation and refund rules of India railways.

Here are the ticket cancellation charges and refund rules of IRCTC

1) In case of ticket cancellation, the refund amount always gets credited back to the same account through which payment was made during ticket booking.

2) For offline tickets, cancellation can be done by visiting the PRS (Passenger Reservation System) counters, tickets booked online can be cancelled online only.

3) If a confirmed ticket is cancelled more than 48 hours before the scheduled departure of the train, a flat cancellation charge of Rs. 240 is deducted for AC first class and executive class. Rs.200 is charged for AC 2 tier, while Rs 180 is charged for AC 3 tier/AC chair car/ AC 3 Economy. For sleeper class tickets, Rs 120 is charged, while Rs 60 is charged for second class tickets, IRCTC said on its website.

4) If you cancel your confirmed ticket within 48 hours and up to 12 hours before the scheduled departure of the train, 25 per cent of the fare subject to the minimum flat rate mentioned, is deducted as cancellation charges.

5) In case, a confirmed ticket is cancelled less than 12 hours and up to four hours before the scheduled departure of the train or up to chart preparation whichever is earlier, 50 per cent of the fare is deducted as cancellation charges subject to the minimum cancellation charges.

6) In case the ticket is not cancelled or TDR not filed online up to four hours before the scheduled departure of the train, no refund is admissible on the tickets having confirmed reservation.

7) No refund is permissible on RAC e-tickets in case the ticket is not cancelled or TDR not filed online up to thirty minutes before the scheduled departure of the train.

8) No refund will be allowed on cancellation of confirmed Tatkal tickets. For contingent cancellation and waitlisted Tatkal ticket cancellations, charges will be deducted as per Railway rules. If the Tatkal ticket is in waiting then some amount will be deducted while the rest will be refunded to the customer. Partial cancellation is allowed on Tatkal e-tickets.

9) In case, on a family e-ticket, some passengers have confirmed reservation while others are on RAC or waiting list, full refund of fare, less processing fees, shall be admissible for confirmed passengers on the condition that the ticket shall be cancelled online or TDR shall be filed online for all the passengers up to 30 minutes before the scheduled departure of the train.

10) If a train is marked as "CANCELLED" in PRS due to breaches, floods, accidents etc. full refund is admissible in case the ticket is cancelled within three days of the scheduled departure of the train. In case of e-tickets, such cancellations can be done through the Internet.
